For years, "recycled" and "fashionable" felt like opposites in the world of clothing. That perception is changing fast, as brands, designers and consumers increasingly embrace garments made from recycled fibres – not as a compromise, but as a genuine style choice.

Recycling in fashion

Fast fashion's business model – cheap, disposable clothing produced and discarded at enormous speed – has come under intense scrutiny for its environmental impact, from water and chemical use in production to the mountains of textile waste it generates at end of life. In response, an increasing number of brands are building collections around recycled fibres, repurposed fabrics and materials recovered from textile waste streams, positioning circularity as a core part of their identity rather than a side initiative.

PICVISA joins RETEXCAT project

PICVISA is participating in the RETEXCAT project, an initiative focused on advancing textile recycling capabilities in Catalonia and supporting the development of a more circular and environmentally responsible textile industry. The project brings together technology providers, textile companies and research institutions to address the technical challenges that have historically limited textile recycling – particularly the sorting of mixed-fibre garments into streams that can actually be reprocessed into new yarn or fabric.

PICVISA's contribution centres on its ECOSORT TEXTIL sorting technology, which uses sensor-based identification to separate textile waste by fibre composition – a critical step in turning discarded clothing back into a usable raw material. As more of this kind of infrastructure comes online, the supply of high-quality recycled fibre available to fashion brands grows, making recycled fashion not just a niche choice but a genuinely scalable alternative to fast fashion.
