Landfill mining is a reminder that the materials we're trying to recover today don't only come from current waste streams – some of it is already buried, waiting.
PICVISA attended the "Landfill Mining" conference, organised by the Borsa de Subproductes of the Consell de Cambres de Comerç de Catalunya, an event focused on the recovery of materials and resources from existing landfill sites.
Landfill mining involves excavating and processing material that's already been deposited in landfills, with the aim of recovering recyclable materials – metals, plastics, glass – that were buried before today's sorting technology and recycling rates existed, or that were simply not separated at the time. The material that comes out of a landfill is typically far more degraded and mixed than freshly collected waste, which makes accurate sorting even more important to separate what's still recoverable from what isn't.
For sorting technology providers, conferences focused on landfill mining highlight a different kind of application – one where the challenge isn't just keeping pace with current waste volumes, but also addressing the material that's accumulated over decades and that represents both an environmental liability and a potential source of recoverable resources.
