An 8% year-on-year increase in domestic plastic recycling doesn't happen by accident – it's the cumulative effect of more households separating waste correctly and more collection systems being in place to handle it.
Figures for 2019 showed continued growth in the recycling of domestic plastic packaging in Spain – an 8% increase that builds on a multi-year trend of rising household recycling rates.
Much of this growth tracks with greater public awareness – campaigns around plastic pollution, more visible recycling infrastructure in households and municipalities, and broader media attention to waste issues have all contributed to more consistent recycling behaviour at the household level.
This trend put Spain on track to meet, and in some categories exceed, the European recycling targets set for 2025 – though hitting collection targets is only half the picture. The material collected still needs to be sorted accurately enough to actually be recycled, which is where sorting plants and the technology they rely on come into play.
